TAROT & DIVINATION

Humanity has always felt the need to know what will happen in the future.  In the very earliest days it was important to know where food animals would be found.  When agriculture began, weather forecasting became important.  Family matters mattered too, such as a woman's fertility, the sex of a baby.  The need for more sophisticated forecasting grew as life became more complex: the outcome of business enterprises, alignment with political rulers, how fortunes and relationships could be made or lost in war and in peace. Astrology was developed in very early civilisations and was extremely important to the ruling and military classes.

In many cases knowledge of the future did not preclude belief in being able to alter, or at least minimise negative effects of that future, for example by petitions to the Gods or sacrifices.  In some cultures a more fatalistic ethos grew, "What is written, is written", evolving into what we now call a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The tools for delving into the future evolved along the lines of the culture using them.  When divine power was life's guiding force, all that was needed was to become possessed by the spirit of the god, as in Delphi.  When people became less trustful of the gods they evolved their own methods, such as casting runes or scrying.  It has long been believed that the Tarot cards were first used in the Middle Ages, probably in France or Italy and many books have been written concerning their origin.

Modern day divination methods include cards and "games" recently developed, based on current beliefs concerning angels, channelled material, psychology, Nature, even ETs.  Tarot cards can now be found which include TVs!
