Wholistic Health

Your health should be considered wholistically, that is to say no single lack of health can be considered in isolation, but is part of the whole you.  For example a headache is very rarely caused by damage to the head (although of course damage to the head is very likely to result in a headache!).  A headache can be caused by stress, by chemical imbalance (e.g. from hunger), by tension elsewhere in the body, by poor posture from damage to another part of the body, by eyestrain, by loud noise, by allergies etc etc.  Treating the symptom will help the relieve the symptom, but will not be a cure, you will continue getting headaches until you deal with the cause.  Like peeling the layers of an onion you need to get to the root cause which will likely be a mixture of mental, emotional, physical and sometimes spiritual.

When you have a headache, your general tolerance to life goes down. You become less easy-going and can appear more easily angered, upset or unhappy.  Your appetite and digestion may be affected.  If you were not aware that these symptoms appeared every time you had a headache you might treat them separately.  If you took something to help your digestion every time you needed it, your digestion would improve but it would not stop your headache, whereas treating the headache would automatically cure your digestion (this is an example, please do not think poor digestion and headaches are automatically linked).

So, to cure your headaches, you need to go to the highest cause, the top of the ladder.  We call this "chunking up".  You may well find that you need to deal with a self-esteem issue or something similar in order to truly rid yourself of headaches (again, this is just an example).  To trace our hypothetical headache back to self-esteem we might follow this path: the headache seems to be due to stress and being overtired, this is because you are trying hard at work and taking on more than you can comfortably handle, plus running around after your family, taking on all the household tasks with little help.  When you are tired you do not allow yourself to rest until everything is done.  You worry about what needs doing.  All this can be because you are trying to please and because you feel you have a duty to do it.  You are critical of yourself but nurturing to others.  Although you would find it hard to admit to yourself, you do not value yourself but see your value in the amount of help you give, the amount of work you do.  I'm sure you recognise the pattern here.  This can all be caused by situations you encountered in childhood (again, an example only).

Having found that self-esteem is a major contributor, you can now treat the heart (not the physical heart but the emotional heart).  You can also treat the mental pattern you have developed because of this.  Treatment will depend on what your wholistic therapist specialises in, but may include a remedy, a visualisation or affirmation, colour therapy, an essential oil or any other combination for physical relief of the symptom plus dealing with the root cause.

We would also like to make it clear that no therapist can heal you, you heal yourself.  The therapist's job is to help you understand and heal yourself, you have to do the work after they point the way.  If you are not prepared to take responsibility and control then you will never truly heal.

It is suprising how many people are not ready to be well.  Some like the sympathy and care they receive ("I've tried everything and nothing works for me"), some fear when they are well they will be asked to do even more, some simply won't allow themselves the time off in order to get well (deep-rooted stuff there!).  Nobody can make you well, you have to want to, to allow yourself to and be willing to enjoy yourself.
